UKCAT Format

Candidates have 2 hours to complete the UKCAT. Each section is timed separately. The format is Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) where candidates select one answer from a list of various options. The five subtest components of the UKCAT include:

Verbal Reasoning: This section assesses the candidate's ability to think logically about written information and rationalise conclusions accordingly. Candidates are given an extract from a book, magazine or other common forms of written text. Three statements will be issued in relation to the main written text. For each statement, the candidate needs to determine if it is true, false or if they are unsure. There is only one correct answer for each verbal reasoning question.

Quantitative Analysis: This section assesses the candidate's ability to solve numerical questions. Candidates are given a chart, table or graph with four corresponding questions. The questions comprise of five multiple choice options of which only one is correct.

Abstract Reasoning: This section assesses the candidate's ability to infer relationships from information by convergent and divergent thinking. Candidates will be given a pair of shapes known as 'Set A' and 'Set B' with five corresponding questions. For each question, candidates must select which set (either A or B) is correct or if they are unsure. Only one answer is correct.

Decision Analysis: This section assesses the candidate's cognitive ability and behavioural patterns to decode information from which logic can not solely be relied on. Candidates will be given one scenario with 36 corresponding questions. Unlike the other subtests, there can be various correct answers.

Non-cognitive Analysis: This section assesses the candidate's ability to become a successful healthcare practitioner. There are no right or wrong answers. Candidates are required to select how strong they agree or disagree with general statements and statements referring to their own character.
